Bequest Language for Donors
Below is boilerplate text to help you and your attorney draft a bequest. You will want to word your will or living trust to reflect your own goals and intentions regarding Caltech, but please be sure the organization's correct legal name appears in all final documents as:
“California Institute of Technology, a California nonprofit corporation, Federal Tax Identification Number: 95-1643307.”
General Bequests
“I give to California Institute of Technology, a charitable, tax-exempt organization located in California, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 95-1643307 [insert here the exact dollar amount].”
Specific Bequests
“I give to California Institute of Technology, the charitable, tax-exempt organization located in California, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 95-1643307, [insert here a description of the particular property].”
Residuary Bequests
“I give to California Institute of Technology, the charitable, tax-exempt organization located in California, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 95-1643307, all [or a portion] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”
Contingent Bequests
“If [name/s of primary beneficiary/ies] do/es not survive me, or shall die within ninety (90) days from the date of my death, or as a result of a common disaster, then I give to California Institute of Technology, the charitable, tax-exempt organization located in California, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 95-1643307, [insert here the exact dollar amount, description of property, or percentage of residual estate].”
